Starting An Art Collection
Identify what kind of art you like. The following techniques can help you determine what that is: 1. Visit 3 to 6 museums displaying different types of art. Finish your visit by purchasing postcards in the gift shop that reflect artworks that are attractive to you. Toss these cards in a bowl, and don't look at them again until you have visited all the museums on your list. Once you have done so, review all the cards and look for similarities among them in terms of mediums chosen, time period of the artists, or the style of the artworks. 2. Visit your local library and find an art history book that spans at least four centuries of art from many different countries. Use...

The Best Art Schools

Author:
Jason Gluckman

To get into the top schools in the United States like Harvard or Stanford, applicants need much more than intelligence. This is because there are thousands of applicants to these schools who are all smart and intelligent. These schools also base their decision to admit a student based on other criteria as well, including the grasp of the applicant's other skills not related to academics.

With the country's top art schools like the Art Institute in Chicago and the UCLA School of Art and Architecture, the same principle applies because the people in admissions for these schools do not solely base their decision to accept a student into their school on artistic talent alone. This is because, just like any other top school in the country, they also base their decisions on other criteria as well. Given this, people who wish to get accepted to some of the tops art schools in the country would do well to be aware of what these schools look for in applicants so that they can prepare well for their application.

Some tips

Usually, the admission staff in some of the top art schools considers a number of things about the applicant during the whole application process. Some of the more basic considerations include the applicant's portfolio, his academics or class ranking, his admissions essay, and the letters of recommendations that he would submit. With regard to the applicant's portfolio, people in admissions usually look for the technical skills and the creativity of the applicant, his ability to draw from observation, and his use of different media in his creations.

However, apart from these, there are also some other considerations that people in admissions look at, especially during the interview process. During interviews, they look for motivation or the passion of the applicant, his commitment to art, his openness to new ideas and critiques, and the ability to articulate his work.

In getting into the country's top art schools, your artistic talent is not the only basis for acceptance. This is because these art schools base their decisions on other criteria, including your performance during the interview or your attitude with regard to your work. Given this, people who wish to get into some of the country's top art schools should prepare themselves well with regard to these criteria to increase their chances of being accepted.

Abstract Art Galleries
An abstract art gallery or museum usually hosts art exhibitions and is also used as a location for the sale of art. Some of the abstract art form represented in such museums includes fauvism, cubism, surrealism and abstract expressionism. Some famous abstract art galleries in the world are Centre Pompidou, located in Paris, Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and the Pecci Museum of Contemporary Art and Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Italy. England hosts some famous abstract art museums like Annely Juda, Estorick Collection, Modern Art Oxford, Serpentine Gallery, Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Tate St Ives, Tate Liverpool and Pier Art Gallery. The United States also boosts two popular art galleries, the Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Museum. Centre Georges Pompidou, commonly known as Pompidou Centre, houses around 50,000 art works including paintings, sculptures, drawings and photographs. On the other hand, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection is a small museum on the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy, which primarily contains the personal art collection of Peggy Guggenheim. However, the museum also displays collections of other prominent American modernists and Italian futurists, and includes work based on themes of cubism, surrealism and abstract expressionism. The museum has gained prominence in Italy for its collection of European and American art of the first half of the 20th century. England houses some well-known art galleries. Modern Art Oxford and the Tate Gallery have some amazing abstract art collections. Modern Art Oxford was established in 1969 by a small group of Oxford dons and hosts works of renowned artists like Tracey Emin. Tate Gallery encompasses Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, Tate St. Ives and Tate Modern, and houses some of the best abstract art in the world. ...
